Thanks all of you for trying to help. What you describe is only adding a Timeline to a Chronology view of one individual, not his ancestors. That's not in my view a great deal of use, compared with knowing which grandparents were alive when, as I said earlier, "So now I go Reports, Report Menu, Timeline report, and look at a timeline report for the old ancestors, and I look forward to seeing who was alive in the civil war, the plague, and who lived through the clearances in Scotland"
Surely one can add a Timeline file to a Timeline report, not just to a Chronology view?
