All the keyboards I have used have the | above the \ in the upper right corner. [Couldn't resist saying this!]

(And my top left key next to 1 has ~ and `. The bottom right has ? and /. Very confusing when trying to tell someone where things are.)

There seem to be several different "standard" keyboards around.

Well, I have the | above \ in the bottom right (ergonomic American
keyboard), but the original email I questioned said something about this
"pipe" NOT being the one with two vertical lines as shown on the key itself.
Moot point, as I see that my key that has two short vertical lines actually
types out as | which is the character desired. Sorry to have caused these
additional posts...

The ¦ sign I referred to as the 'pipe' in England - in that it was
used in DOS for doing things like pausing a screen run - is the very
top L key next to 1. As Glen says, the one we need is bottom L, with \
Other US/UK keyboard differences are in the $, @ etc. There are several.
