Hi Anne,
When you use Split Screen, you can have two different Family Files open or different views of the same file. You can have up to 6 views of the same file after multiple split screens with a different tab selected in each window. Not quite sure why you'd want to have 6 open -especially if working on one monitor as most of us do - but 2 or 3 can be useful.

6 - not 8 appears to be the limit in Legacy 6.
