Ileen,

Interesting question. I'll try to provide a little insight.

>From my viewpoint, there are 2 major differences between Legacy and
GenSmarts.

First, they are both similar in the fact that they both provide suggested
sources based upon the data you have. These sources are suggested based on
time period, location, age, and in Legacy's case, gender.

The presentation is quite different. GenSmarts presents all the sources for
everyone in one list, unranked and not prioritized. Legacy displays these
suggested sources in more of a "guidance" process. This means that if you
asked a seasoned genealogist for assistance, they would give you a list of
sources. First they will ask you what your goal is. Then, based on that
goal, they would suggest which sources to be looked at first. Those sources
that are higher in the list are those that would more likely contain
information to help you achieve your goal.

Legacy's Research Guidance (RG) was developed with that in mind. Rather than
giving you hundreds of sources for you to sort through, it does the sorting
and prioritizing for you.

Future plans: Legacy's RG will continue to be developed for all major
countries of the world. This, of course, will take time, because each source
is individually reviewed and ranked according to the time period, location,
and goal. We have a team of professional genealogists and seasoned
researchers that contribute to the guidance.

Many have commented that they would like Legacy to automatically fill in the
search forms for online sources, similar to GenSmarts. This is coming soon.
If only we didn't have to spend a week soaking in the beautiful sun of the
Caribbean - it'd be out sooner. :)

We will give you the ability to add/share your own sources/repositories.
Currently you can ignore a source. We will add the ability to ignore a
repository if the suggested repository doesn't work for you.

Finally, some have commented that there aren't enough online links in
Legacy's RG. While it's true that not everything online is currently linked
in RG, we must remember that in fact, not everything is available online. Do
not overlook the suggested sources just because they cannot be found online.

Through our recent survey and through hundreds of private emails sent to us,
we've had wonderful response to our initial release of this RG. Remember
though, that it is still an initial release. The future will bring wonderful
things.

Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

Subject: [LegacyUG] GenSmarts vs. Legacy 6 Research Guidance

I have been trying to compare Legacy 6 Research Guidance and GenSmarts
for Legacy. Each seems to address research from a slightly different
angle.

My question, will Legacy research guidance become more and more like
GenSmarts as more sources are added to it, or are they enough different
that GenSmarts for Legacy would be useful to researchers in addition to
Legacy Research Guidance?

In other words, if I now have Legacy 6 Research Guidance, is there any
reason I would want to also own GenSmarts?

Ileen
