That is what I do. I hope my information will be valuable to someone for
centuries to come and who knows what abbreviations will be used then. Just
think of the problems we have figuring out the terms and abbreviations used
only a couple of hundred years ago. I keep a book of abbreviations near my
desk and still find some that the book doesn't contain. All those Latin
abbreviations!

And I maybe a dunce, but I still have trouble sometimes figuring out 2
letter USA postal code for some states. I have to keep a list close by for
when I get information from someone else. Then you have to assume they used
the right state code, because they rarely include a county :-( And I'm just
talking about USA. The UK and European codes really give me problems with
out constantly looking at the Chapman codes!

I guess I am just venting. Forgive me.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Fw: Location list

Regarding abbreviations; I recently purchased "Getting It Right, the
definitive guide to recording family history accurately" by Mary H.
Slawson. In the book, she recommends, "None of the information used
to substantiate the identity of your ancestor should be abbreviated".

That might sound harsh, and each person must decide to what degree
they will use abbreviations. My current thought is to follow Mary's
recommendation for regular location names, and use abbreviations only
in the short location name.
My two cents worth.
