I have 98 SE and 786 MB Ram and a 128 MB Video card. Works OK. Once you get
under 50% Ram, the computer will run like a dog! I do a lot of MS-Access
data base work and it is a hog when tables queries, etc. are open, so you
need a lot of headspace of memory.
Memory chips are cheap, so I suggest you fully popualte your mother board
with larger chips. If curent ones are 64 MB, remove and use 128 or 256. I
think my Dell has 3 slots so 3x256=768 MB.
Be careful to avoid static when handling chips. Be careful inserting the new
chips correctly and make sure they are seated. Should take no more than 1/2
hour.
Someone at staples can tell you how or get a neighborhood teenager.
Hope this helps Jack

Will it work on Windows 98 SE?
Thanks for any advice I can get.
I have 98SE (with 320 MB of memory, but that is not the real issue anyway
I understand).
I have had a bad time trying to use it and it is only with the great help
(and a great deal of time) of Brian Schultz (a member of this list, to
whom I am eternally grateful) did we even begin to get anywhere. I was
frequently getting random error msges and often then shutting down. These
were frequently to do with running out of memory.
For me it is a matter or not having enough resources **(Brian, pse correct
me if I am wrong)** and it is only by closing everything that can be
closed (and non vital things being taken off) can I even get some use out
of it. One of the most significant things is that I have taken off
ZoneAlarm (firewall) and replaced it with Sygate. Apparently that doesn't
use as many resources as ZA.
The very interesting thing abt that surprisingly (and I assume it was
changing to Sygate that did it) is the fact that up until then I could not
use the Research Centre at all, (it just didn't work, it wouldn't open and
would then crash). With the change of firewall I now can, although I
haven't as yet but it opens up OK and shows all things it should show.
One big problem I have even now is that when I open the programme and then
go immediately into the Name List it straightway goes down into the
'yellow' and even 'half yellow' if I have the Resource Meter showing. (I
know it takes up resources of its own, but I go and have a look at it
sometimes :-[ :-X !!)
It has been so frustrating trying to use it. Sometimes it goes OK for a
while but then as more (or sometimes only one or two) screens are opened I
eventually get the msge of '90% of resources are used'.
So - having bought 6, I have decided not to fight with it anymore (until
the day I get XP) and to work with 5 mainly and just use 6 for the odd
thing here and there that I want from it.
I'm sorry to have to tell this sad story but this is my experience. I am
so disappointed because I have found Legacy to be such a stable programme
over the several versions that I have used. I am not blaming Legacy as
such it still is a programme head and shoulders above the rest in my
opinion. It is just that it obviously wants more than 98SE can give it.
Without Brian's help I wouldn't even have got this far.
