Thanks Jack and Keith for the ideas on how to get Legacy to show there is an
update available. Jack, you really gave some great, detailed information.
I have made an adjustment to my URL filter to allow
www.legacyfamilytree.com, but I agree that it can only be tested when the
update becomes available.
Also, because I don't often close out of Legacy, I am more likely to see the
update notice mentioned on the LUG first, rather than on re-entry. I do
have access to all the Legacy News messages. Therefore, I'm not quite sure
why the update box doesn't work the same way, except that it involves an
executable file. However, even though the notification doesn't work, I can
still use that update box to get the new file. Hmmm...I guess I still have
a lot to learn about computers!
Thanks again,

I also couldn't get the program to tell me that updates were available. I
use Norton Internet Security (NIS) and couldn't find anything obvious to
change things. And of course you can only check if a change works when the
next update comes.
With three machines, though, I did have a slight chance when the last
couple
of updates arrived. Although they all sit behind the same firewall, I
turned
of most of the other checks on two machines.
The update available message was correctly seen on two machines, but not
the
one with the whole of NIS running. I changed one of the "privacy" settings
to allow www.legacyfamilytree.com to - find out about my browser,
information about visited sites, animated images, scripts and flash
animation. The next time I started Legacy on that machine, it too said
there
was an update available.
I suspect that it was related to "information about visted sites". This
setting caused problems on one or two other sites where you access images.
It is probably a test to make sure you haven't hacked into the system.
Hence this issues is, to my mind, directly related to firewalls/anti-virus
packages and their add-on features. Whether Dave or others can advise on
what the checks are I'm not sure. One clue is that "Legacy News" was
working
properly throughout.
BUT, the check for an update only seems to be made when you first start up
Legacy. I couldn't get the message to change while it was running and
6.0.0.70 was released. But as soon as I shut down and restarted the
message
appeared.
