Wow! I always thought that cntrl + i worked the same way as the alt + 0171
and alt + 0187, but I see that I should have tried them out separately.
Thanks for setting me straight! This will definitely be a fine work-around
for me.

The work around is to manually enter the formatting characters as described
in Legacy Help for the Standard version. I have just tested it and it works
and it "sticks". Remember that the characters we are talking about here are
not << and >> the are « and » entered by entering alt-0171 and alt-0187
respectively.
