Eureka! You are all so smart... \VBG/

I did try the GEDCOM re-install and then the original version
re-install under a different name, but the one that did the trick was
to do a system restore to a few days ago.

The only major system change during that time was that I had tried to
install ACDSee to work with some images and for some reason I could
not get it fully installed. I think that one time before I might have
tried to install an earlier version of that same program and it might
have left a cookie on my system a couple of years ago which would then
violate the 30 day free useage rule. So I got discouraged and
un-installed it.

Now I do not know if it had anything at all to do with that program
but it was the only system change recently.

What I think MIGHT have happened was that yesterday's connection to
the internet here was a nightmare. I was trying several times to
download GRAMPS, a LINUX genealogy program at the recommendation of
Dick Eastman's most recent newsletter. The download would start OK
then slow down to a crawl, actually almost stopping. So I tried many
times to download it over and over. While doing this my whole system
seemed to get very sluggish and websites that I use all the time would
not even open, could not flip between pages or programs, etc.

I did shut down and reboot about a half dozen times and I think one of
these times LEGACY was no doubt running and might have gotten
corrupted at that time.

The best thing is that all of your very good common sense help ideas
solved the problem. I will post a notice here in a few days after I
have used everything for a while.

Thank you all VERY MUCH again.

Your symptoms also make me wonder if something else wasn't happening as well. Likely not, but it pays to be sure. You likely caused problems with what you described as a failed install attempt.

One other thing that you might want to try, just to make sure your computer hasn't had some sort of malware sneak in is a scan by HijackThis which can be downloaded here - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip .

You should unzip it to a folder of its own, and run from there. If you have difficulty interpreting the output, save a copy of the scan and send it to me. I've been finding rootkits on some of my clients' computers lately. Rootkits are designed to hide themselves and other malware from scanners and windows itself. HijackThis doesn't scan for malware itself, but the results of malware.

Using pc_tune_ups at gorge dot net will be less likely to get lost as it could in the large quantity of mail that goes to my genealogy account.
