G'day,
12 hours ago I sent the following message to the list using
[email protected] but so far it does not appear to have
appeared. Am I correct?
Being new to the list I'm keen to get my "filtering & message sending rules"
set correctly so this time I've "replied" to another message already
received.
PETER H
G'day from Perth Western Australia,
I'm brand new to this list but have been transcribing most of my accumulated
data onto Legacy Std 5 (converted to 6 yesterday) for the lat 4 months.
All appeared to be going well until about 5 weeks ago when I noticed - when
printing a descendents report - a duplication of names covering about 3
generations. Because I could not solve it my self and my local "Legacy
mentor" was otherwise committed elsewhere I stopped inputting on the main
family but I did add to some non affected (in law) families.
We've had another look at the main family & it and it appears to have been
caused by giving one wife of my main family the same husband twice. That has
now I hope been rectified.
During the 5 weeks I attempted to back up and I don't think that it worked
as it should. I say this because I know that certain in law ancestral data
was transcribed but is now no longer shown in the updated format.
A further complication is that during some data entry Legacy software
"complained" about what I was doing and the system shut itself down. On
reopening I (perhaps) dealt with another branch of the in law tree and did
not notice any problems.
I wonder if what might have happened is that as a result of EITHER the
backups not being processed as expected or the "crashes" the "backed up"
version of the main fdb file is occasionally opened up and then I input some
data to it. If there is a second file, I cannot locate it.
QUESTION - is it expected that the back up process creates one
or more versions of the file & if so have others experienced this possible
system opens various versions of the file?
QUESTION - although when adding/creating data in one of the
personal or event windows we press "save" is this a total (or "hard") save
or just a simply a "soft" save to allow us to move onto the next window?
I had gone into the "customise" windows a few days ago to see what could be
done and to set my own requirements, so perhaps I'd altered something that
has influenced this non retention of data.
Any constructive suggestions will be appreciated.
