I use only two types of names for a Source List Name - either a place
name or a surname. Like Dave, my place names start with a state/province,
then county, then city, then type of record - or surname, then given name,
then type of record. I try to duplicate the order and headings of the LDS
Family History Library Catalog as much as possible. That way, I am
intuitively looking up sources the same way the vast majority of the time.

Examples: Missouri, Livingston, cemetery - Vol. 1. The "Output"
screen at the bottom of the window will quickly tell me if this is the
source I want. Or Wyoming, Big Horn - 1860 US Census. Or Fillerup,
Albert - birth record. And so on. I file vital record certificates
(birth, marriage, death) under surname, given name - birth cert.(for
example), although they could just as easily be filed under a location.

I never, never start a Source List Name with anything like: Census, or
1860 Census, or Birth Certificate, or Photographs, or Author, or even the
title of a book. The only exceptions are the IGI, (which I have renamed to
A-IGI so it appears at the top of my list), the Social Security Death Index
(likewise renamed to A-SSDI), and the Ancestral File. I have found that
every other source fits either under a location or a surname. I try to
remember that the Source List Name is for me to easily find the source
again, and not necessarily to describe the source - that is left to the
other fields. And, I will often temporarily add an "A" to the front of a
source name if I am using it a lot - that way it is at the top of the list.
When I'm done, I just rename it back to what it was. (I know - I can
accomplish the same thing using source tags and/or the source clipboard, but
at times its just easier to have three or four sources that I'm using in
various combinations right at the top of the Source Name List - I just
rename them when I'm done!)

Someday, it would be nice to be able to list a source under the Source
List Name in more than one way - i.e. fields where I can list the same
source name two or three different ways. Of course, a key-word search
option would be just as effective!
