Just to show another side to this question, I use alternate B. M. D. in what I am doing now. I am entering death certificate information from the wonderful West Virginia certificates online at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx and much of what I enter is not new but entered previously from other sources, I want to see all the possible facts and to be able to choose the most likely information from all of the entries. This may or may not be good practice but helps me to choose the most possible true answer from all of the entries.

NOTE: I am well aware that death certificates are not always correct as in one that I found that listed the birth and death on the same day but the person was 60 years old when he died, juts my tuppence worth

2nd NOTE: I long ago learned to NOT import files into my data so ,even though I only have one hand to type with, I enter it all piece by piece

Thanks Brian
Helps me figure out what is best to do, your suggestions will save
space on my file, sure makes a lot of sense, and will save monotonous
reading in reports. My family members use other programs which don't
have the versatility of Legacy, but they seem to like the depth of the
reports Legacy produces. Much easier to ask LUG list for suggestions,
like when I found several occurrences of two people sharing a grave,
and wasn't sure how to deal with that.

Hi Tracy,
I've put my comments below your questions. My philosophy is to
avoid using alternate events except where absolutely necessary
though and to use the source details entries to state exactly
what any source for an event says about the event.

I would only create an alternate event if there was a significant
difference in the dates (ie. one has a different year, or two
with different months or days) If all the variations are for the
same "date" though I would use the source details entry to say
that a particular source had only the year or whichever part(s)
of the date instead of a full date.

Again, as long as all the sources agree on the town I would use
the source details to say that a particular source identified
only the town. The source which does say which cemetery the
person is buried in would have its details include that.
