John and other Linux users,

John, I do hope you post your results on the Wine
Applications Database as suggested by Kraig.

Now that the year end holidays and festivities are
mostly behind us (my mother-in-law is still hanging
around). Maybe we can get back to Legacy & Linux.

I use both MS Windows and Linux (currently Ubuntu).
I setup Ubuntu Linux to see if GRAMPS, a Linux
genealogy application, was to my fairly simple needs.
But I much prefer Legacy's interface.

I have not used Wine or its cousins. Wine seems to
be somewhat of a stop-gap measure. I would like to
see Legacy ported to Linux, but have come to under-
stand that Legacy with all its 'thousands' of bells and
whistles is deeply under the control of MS.

It is also my understanding that Wine can be a useful
porting tool. That should make it fairly easy for many
Windows application writers to port their source code
over to Linux. Hopefully Millennia corp has setup a Linux
box for research on porting Legacy to Linux. Even
a small version of Legacy for us simple needs people
would be nice.

There are 2 articles about Wine in Linux Pro Magazine,
issues 57 & 58 (Aug & Sept 2005). Email me if you
want copies.

On one of my other PCs I will soon be installing a 2nd
hard drive and the plan is to install Suse on it. In the
past I have used Suse and like it. Like Legacy it is
a bit chubby, but at the same time it is pretty.

Greetings Keith and all,

I've taken on the personal task of attempting to get Legacy Deluxe v6.0
to run under Wine 0.9 via the Crossover Office tool under Fedora Core 4
Linux.
I have so far been successful in getting it to install and come up when
first invoked. I installed it in a Win98 bottle (Wine terminology) and
also installed IE6 and dcom95, which are pretty much required for the
Legacy install to run (IE6 installs lots of dll's in the win98 bottle which
aid windows apps to run under Wine).

On a very cursory level, it runs fine, but I need to do some exhaustive
tests and also debug some issues with the research tab (Anything I attempt
to do in the research tab causes a hang). I should be able to focus in the
coming week and provide some more useful feedback to the group. I
apologize for not getting to this sooner, but events the past few weeks got
in the way, the most positive being that we got DSL at our home and I had
to deal with networking and security and setting up a spot in my house to
work from home as needed.

However, don't wait for me :) - feel free to install Wine on your Linux
machine and then attempt to do an install and run of Legacy. Multiple
troubleshooters are better than one and I am merely a strongly interested
user with some computer background that can spend some of my spare time
playing with it. This is my first attempt at getting any windows
application to run under Wine, so I stumble a lot, but my heart is in the
right place :) .

Anyone out there been using or trying to use a copy of
the Legacy to work with Linux?? Haven't seen anything
so far ... any help appreciated.
