Peter,
I actually use the Alt. entries quite frequently. Often one discovers
conflicting evidence (or less than evidence!) for a date. I would
enter all the alternatives as Alt. dates and cite each individually,
even if later discarded. That way a record is preserved that you have
considered the alternative and why it was rejected, or what the issues
are to resolve the confusion. I'd keep the main date for the "most
probable" date. Purists may only use the main date for the "almost
certain" date and use Alt. dates until their "almost certain" criteria
are met, but I don't go that far. Als always include lots of
explanatory notes - it's amazing what you forget after only a few
months!

You can manually sort them down the list if you prefer. You can also
mark them not to be included in reports if you prefer to keep the
reports simple.
