Yes. And I suspect you'll not see it in a commercial genealogy product for quite a while.
Genealogy programs - not just Legacy, but almost all of them, are stuck in the late 1960's/early 1970's in terms of their data handling. There's a pretty specific list of things that most people want to do - record ancestors and descendents on a bloodline, and where they got the information. They want to get out a pretty fixed set of reports - oh, various programs have bells and whistles, but if you can't do the "standard" reports, folks will fuss and not buy your product. And ease of use is a BIG factor, as is ease of support. Yes, you could do a lot more analysis with something like MySQL, and you could certainly have a more flexible data setup, and it would make more sense to anyone used to working with databases...but it wouldn't make much sense to genealogists unless you taught them to use the tools. Reports would be a headache. And support would be "interesting". You can always use ACCESS to get to the data, and write it out to MySQL or anything else you care to use. But most folks using the program now won't even use ACCESS. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Glen Carreras Sent: Saturday, January 14, 2006 17:18 To: [email protected] Subject: [LegacyUG] MySQL Support? I have been wondering, has there ever been any discussion about supporting another database format like MySQL? I'm thinking that an option like this could be very useful. -- www.noesnada.com Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup%40mail.millenniacorp.com/ To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp -- No virus found in this incoming message.
