Entering an estimated date of death for new individuals is easier and stays until changed. I'm using "After 1881" for everyone found in the 1881 census.
Sometimes a Legacy GEDCOM opened in another genealogy program results in Y in the death location field and then the information about living people would be transferred when a file is shared.
