I have always done it for most all officer ranks but only senior enlisted such as Sergeant Major. However if it is early (US) history such as Rev War, then a lower rank would certainly be acceptable - - Private is not usually entered. I also do not normally add as a title unless the individual is deceased but there are exceptions. A word of caution, be sure and abbreviate the rank as spelling it out can create confusion and also make sure there is a comma between the title and name. Those who remember the classic 1970 book and movie Catch 22 will know about the character "Major Major Major" (played by Bob Newhart). I am sure others have there own thoughts and utilization on this subject, these are just mine.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Military Ranks?

I was thinking of placing my ancestors' military ranks
in the "Title Prefix" field on the Individual's
Information screen. Mostly it's to remind me of their
military service, but is it an acceptable place for
the designation? I'm thinking along the lines of
"Private Moses Gilbert". It's not used as a regular
form of address. Higher ranking titles, I suppose,
would be a way of showing respect for that person's
service. I do have my GEDCOM posted on Rootsweb, so
the info would be visible to the public. Just looking
for proper protocol....
