Well, Jim, if the census says "none", then I enter it as none. You could add a note to that event saying that other documention (or whatever) indicates that he was indeed employed but the census was in error. Would that take care of it for you? Good point you brought up. As a 3-week user, I've got a lot to learn.

Elsie,

This has been an intriguing path through some pretty neat logic.
Thanks for getting it going. One concern I'm left with is how do you
know whether the person was unemployed or whether the occupation was
just unknown or not reported? I run into this constantly. Folks I
know were farmers, for instance, are not reported as employed on
various census reports.

My problems and my solutions.....

I enter None for people who do not have an occupation in the census. I
needed a way to generate the sentence
"He was not employed on 6 May 1930." I didn't want to use an alternate
sentence for everyone, thinking there must be an easier way.
Therefore, following Don's suggestion in the event fields I enter:

eventname = occupation
desc = [[none]]
date = 6 May 1930

The sentence structure for when only the desc and date are filled
becomes

[:IF [Desc] :: [heshe] was employed as [desc] [ondate] :: [heshe] was
not employed [ondate]].[sources][notes]

I also like to use an event called Relationship where I enter a
person's relationship to either my husband or myself. I use None as a desc in this event field to let me know the person is not related and
that I have already checked for a relationship. My values read:

eventname = Relationship
desc = [[none]]

The sentence structure for when none of the fields are filled in is:
[date]. Since there is no date, no sentence appears. This might not be
kosher, but it works for me.

Once again, thanks for your help.
