Hi Claudia, it took me quite a while to get comfortable with a method of entering sources - at least one that suits me. I also own Mills' "Evidence" and Mills' "QuickSheet" available at the http://www.bcgcertification.org/ website. Mills is also currently working another book due out in the first half of this year called "Evidence Explained." I can't wait to see this one too.

You may want to wait until this book comes out before making major changes to your sources, but here is an idea of how I use Legacy for sourcing to get you started.

My Master Sources are fairly general. Here are some examples:

Book:
List Name: Book: Georgia - Albany, Georgia, Newspaper Clippings Volume I, 1845-1852
Title: Albany, Georgia, Newspaper Clippings Volume I, 1845-1852

Cemetery:
List Name: Cemetery: Florida, Bay, Panama City - Greenwood Cemetery [Interment.net database]
Title: "Greenwood Cemetery," database, «i»Interment.net«/i» web site

Census:
List Name: Census: Georgia, Wilkinson - 1850 U.S. Census [Ancestry.com images] Title: 1850 U.S. census, Wilkinson County, Georgia, population schedule, digital image by subscription, «i»Ancestry.com«/i»

Marriage:
List Name: Marriage: Georgia, Early - Marriage Index, 1851-1900 [Rootsweb database] Title: "Marriage Index: Georgia, Early County 1851-1900," database, «i»Early County, Georgia Rootsweb«/i»

List Name: Personal Correspondence
Title: Personal Correspondence

Note that each List Name starts with the type of data it contains. The title is how it will read on the citation entry (along with the citation details). I also use hyperlinks so the user can go directly to the source via my web site. These are formatted roughly like Mills shows on her "QuickSheet."

Now here are some citation detail examples by type. These are combined with a master source to make a complete citation.

Book: 278 [meaning the page number], or 2:278 [for volume and page]
Cemetery: grave marker for Euzema Rich, photographed by Gail Rich Nestor, 31 May 2004 Census: Elija Rich household, West Side Flint River, dwelling 568, family 568, page 184, from National Archives microfilm M593, roll 146, image 763
Marriage: marriage of W. G. Powell & Lillie Ballou, 6 Feb 1916, E-688
Personal Correspondence: phone conversation between X and Y on [date]

Of course, there are many more types of sources, but this should give you an idea. To see a complete listing of my master sources, please see: http://www.roots2buds.net/browsesources.php. You can see who they are linked to and what repository they came from. I find it very helpful to be able to search a repository and know all the sources I've consulted there.

There are many ways to create sources, depending on your plans for output. Because I primarily use the web for sharing data, this method works well for me, and (I think) Ms. Mills would give it a thumbs up. If "Evidence Explained" comes out with something new, I can use Legacy's handy search and replace to make minor format/style changes.

I hope this helps get you started...

Subject: [LegacyUG] source questions

I am really struggling with entering source information. I know that
Evidence by Elizabeth shown Mills is supposed to be the standard, but it
doesn't seem to match up with what is shown in the examples on the
Legacy site. I know that the source name is what shows up in the Master
Source list, so do Evidence citations go into the title field?

Do most people put the location before the title?

What is the difference between Text of Source and Detail Text?

Thanks for any help.....
