I myself converted from FTM 7 to Legacy about a year and a half ago. I
"remember" when I did the import from FTM that, as Legacy imported the
GEDCOM, it warned me about the FTM Place/Comments being combined and let
me say that I wanted those in Notes rather than Locations. I even have a
vague recollection that I could have decided on a case by case basis if
I wanted to sit there and decide each time a Place/Comment field was
imported. Maybe if you re-import and watch for that warning your
location mess will not occur. You will have to copy and paste locations
from notes fields though. With the Legacy Master Location List you can
quickly select a location that has already been entered and do not have
to copy and paste each one for repeats.

Elizabeth, et al,
I went ahead and bought Legacy (v. 6.0.0.82) tonight
and loaded my RM GEDCOM, 10,000 person database. So
far, I've noticed:
During the import
-Adoptions, children - those with 2 parents had the
note entered in the date field, about 30 instances
(all of these had been imported from an earlier FTM
GedCom and I probably haven't gotten around to
cleaning them up in RM)
Brief review of data, particular notes shows <i> and
<b> inserts for italic and bold fonts coming in from
RM.
There were no unrecognized items and the error file
seems to have about 25 addresses it didn't like.

Then I imported a FTM 2006 GedCom. I wasn't given an
option to make any selections or alterations for FTM.
As a result, all the FTM <place/description> fields
ended up in Legacy's <place> field. WHAT A MESS!
This is the primary reason I bought Legacy. I thought
it would separate place and description. HELP!
2 Unrecognized items: _HEIG and _WEIG
-Wasn't sure what they were so I created an event for
this tag. No data was imported so I'll have to go back
to the FTM file to see what this is about. 5 items,
no problem.
Nothing in the error log.
I've only had the program for a couple of hours ... so
I really haven't looked at everything!
*****
I haven't really researched wall charts outside of RM
so I don't know what I'll end up using. I'm still in
data entry and review mode. RM doesn't put
unnecessary ","s in the boxes in charts. Plus I can
edit the contents of the boxes. Also, I can add up to
8 facts/events to include in the boxes ... such as
occupation and medical.

You will need to use a custom import setting for FTM
2006 GEDCOM files
unless "let Legacy decide" was fixed without notice
in the last build. RM
has child-marriage relationships. FTM and Legacy
allow multiple child-mother
and child-father relationships. Check the original
files to see if any
children have multiple parents before a file
transfer.
Which program are you going to use for wall charts?
Legacy TreeDraw and most
other programs show place holder commas for
incomplete locations. My
relatives like to see wall charts with occupations
and medical details. --
