Before even thinking about a merge I would load the GEDCOM (or other
family file) into a standalone Legacy database and clean it up as much
as possible first (such as putting names locations, and sources you want
to keep in the format you want). It will make any eventual merge go much
smoother.

If you have imported already it may be too late to do this.
