This is actually a case of last name variation - in Ireland they have "branch names" to help distinguish some of the more common Irish names. So my ancestor was baptized John Maheesh, but his real last name is Murphy. His daughter was listed in the report as the daughter of John Murphy, but the index shows John Maheesh and John Murphy. I don't want to list Maheesh in his surname, because he never went by that name in the United States.
