Thanks Cynthia for confirming to me just what a legend I am
in my own mind !!! ;-))

Years ago I decided that abbreviations are Evil!
I decided to stop using them in my Genealogy files and did the conversion
process you are now doing.  It had just occurred to me that whatever
abbreviations one uses imposes more work on any subsequent users of
one's file.  Yeah, I know, use the US standard Postal Code abbreviations.
Well not everybody knows what they are and they may overlap as you
point out with other places in the world.  And who knows if people will
know what the standard postal code is in 200 years or if people of that time
will know that's what we were using now!

The only exception to that is when I have a source who cites an abbreviation
that I don't know what it means.  Then I just leave things exactly as I
found
them but IMO N.Y. N.Y, should be written as New York, New York.
