Hi, Russell --

At the risk of throwing in another "me too," I must say "me too" to the MRIN system the others have told you about.

What I can add is that I just started using it after almost a year of using a system that turned out to be no system at all (and as a Type-A, anal retentive, control freak, I can't tell you how hard this is to admit <grin>).

I just started re-entering all of my information into a new database using all the tricks I've learned from this group over the past few months. While I knew this would be time consuming, what I didn't realize was how revealing it would be. Stuff that I *know* I have I can't find because I have no idea where it is -- in the "figure it out later" pile(s)? Or in a family file, but which one? Because it isn't where I think it should be! I had no problem finding these things when I was working on my project every day, but after a break of only two or three months, I'm totally lost. The beauty of this MRIN system is that it makes sense year after year -- as well as at 4:00 p.m. and at 4:00 a.m. :-)

I've already had to go back to some of my "new" peeps, and finding what I'm looking for is a snap. Like some of the others, I'm using file folders, rather than binders, mostly because hubby tolerates my obsession, but he wouldn't for long if I threw out the file cabinets, etc., in favor of binders and bookcases. :-)

Good luck to you! :-)

Tam

I am sorry if this question has been asked many times before. Is there an archive where I can review previous answers?

I am trying to figure out a good filing system. I have read about filing by MRIN number, also a color system. I also read the user guide for ByGones. In the past I have just numbered my documents and made an index for each family that listed the documents and their number. But I want to get serious and setup a system that will be flexible and useful.
