Glen,

I understood what was happening. I was really querying the use of 'age' for
events after death. As others have indicated, it really is 'years from
birth'.

My gut reaction is that 'age' should not be provided for post-death entries.

Although in that case what would you do if you have a date of an event after
death, but no date of death - e.g. a wedding certificate showing a father as
dead. Possibly set a date of death as Bef ...?

Regards

Bill

William,

At the right side of the Individual view in Legacy (to the right of each
default event), you have the age that happened at that event. The Death age
& Burial age can be different. If the birth event ONLY has a year, the
Death date is at the end of December and the Burial date is in Jan of the
next year, the AGE at death will be one age and the AGE at burial will be 1
year later. THERE IS NO BIRTH DATE only a YEAR.

Try this and see for yourself.

Legacy calculates the age of a person at ANY event with a date. For
example:

Birth date of 01 Jan 1980
Christened date of 01 Jan 1983 the age at christening would be 3

Why don't you look back at a relative that has all 4 default events filled
in and see what it shows for age at the events to the right.

You just might even notice that the age showing to the right of the Birth
event shows how old they would be now. For example, if you have someone
born in the year 1811, they would be 194 or 195 depending on when in the
year they were born.

This is simple date calculations. You can even try these calculations in
Excel or another spreadsheet program.

I'm confused!

My understanding of 'age' at any point in time is the number of years
(months, days, ..) between the date & time of birth and the earlier of
1) the date of the event and
2) the date of death.

In other words since the date of burial falls after the date of death then
the calculation of 'age' would not be based on that date, but on the date of
death (unless the date of death was not known).

Using that logic, the spanning of years should not impact the 'age'.

Have I misunderstood the meaning of 'age'?

That is why. You are spanning 2 years for Death & Burial. The program
doesn't know when exactly the birth is in 1756.

This would be absolutely expected behavior.

You can test this by putting 28 Dec 1756 for the birth date and you will see
that the age doesn't change between death & burial dates.
