Thanks Derek for posting your experiences, that saved me from trying  
too long to figure out what that "gnu.io.PortInUseException" might mean.

However, I made it only a bit further: after adding /var/lock, I can  
now start Melody, but it just hangs (after the "Native lib Version =  
RXTX-2.1-7 // Java lib Version   = RXTX-2.1-7" stuff). It doesn't  
seem to initiate a connection on the NXT, either. And strangely, I  
can't even stop the process with control-c, and can't even kill the  
java process!

Has anyone seen something similar, and has an idea how to get past  
that problem?
