> The ORiNOCO Classic Gold PC card can be used anywhere to connect to a Wi-Fi > network. The card delivers high-speed wireless networking at 11 Mbit/s, > operating in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency. With superior radio receiver > sensitivity and resilience to microwave interference, ORiNOCO has proven to be > the best 802.11b radio in the industry delivering unbeatable range and > throughput performance. This is the original card (before it was dubbed ³classic²) that played a major role in the wireless revolution. Well known for it's good range with it¹s built-in antenna and compatibly with many systems. View photo at http://home.earthlink.net/~tom.roth/orinoco_gold.jpg It's gone under several names such as Lucent, WaveLan, Agere, and now Proxim. This card is compatibly with so many systems. Drivers for all flavors of Windows and Mac OS 7 thru 9 are available at the above website, but if plugged into a Mac running OS X, it appears as an original Apple Airport card because it's the same chipset so you can use the Apple Airport software. I first used this card in my old PowerBook 3400 running Mac OS 9.1 and even tested it in that computer just the other night and was able to connect and web surf. More recently it's been in use in my G4/400MHz desktop Mac running OS X 10.4 by inserting it into the Airport slot where it worked just fine. The only problem there is that the Orinoco has a built-in antenna that makes it longer than an Apple Airport card so I was not able to close the door on the G4 but that beat running an ethernet cable up to the attic and then across the entire length of the house. The Orinoco Gold also has a plug on the end of it to connect to an external antenna for extending your range even more. That¹s why this is a popular wireless ethernet card for hobbyists experimenting with long range antennas. Similar to the original Apple Airport card, the Orinoco supports 802.11b, and 128 bit WEP encryption. Note: the WEP key needs to be in HEX under some OSs, not ASCII but there's a converter tool on the Proxim website to help you convert your WEP key. I will wrap it well in bubble wrap for shipping and will include the original CD that came with it though I would expect more current drivers are on the Proxim website. The CD does not have the Mac OS 7~9 drivers on it. $25 with free shipping within the 48 contiguous United States. Will ship UPS or FedEx Ground so it will be insured and tracked. All items must be paid via PayPal to <tom.r...@earthlink.net> and I will ship it within 1~2 days.
