Technical Specifications

        • The external iSight comes equipped with a 1/4 inch color CCD
sensor. iSight uses a sensor that boasts 640 x 480-pixel VGA
resolution and 24-bit color. Its custom-designed three-part F/2.8 lens
has two aspherical elements. The glass-constructed lens of the iSight
also features automatic focus adjustment with a 5 cm focal length. In
full, the camera weighs about 2.3 ounces.

General Specifications

        • The iSight incorporates internal microphones with digital noise
reduction. In fact, the majority of the camera's body is occupied by
microphones and sound equipment. Only about a quarter of the unit is
devoted to video and picture elements of the camera. The camera
features autoexposure, autofocusing from 50 mm to infinity and video
capture at 30 frames per second, although the frames per second can be
increased or decreased depending on elements such as lighting. The
iSight webcam uses a single FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394) cable for audio,
video and power.
        • When in use, the iSight webcam illuminates a small green LED.
The
LED shuts off when the iSight is no longer in use, but for added peace
of mind, it also has an iris that can be closed by twisting the front
of the camera.
        • iSight is fully supported not only by the Mac OS X operating
system, but by Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems as well.

Here's what a reviewer wrote about the iSight.

The Apple iSight is still more expensive than other webcams you’ll see
(these days mostly because of its scarcity, having been discontinued
by Apple), but its style, superior image quality, sensitive
microphone, and flawless integration with iChat, iMovie, iPhoto and
with some third party video messaging apps like Skype or AOL Instant
Messenger (AIM) make it the ideal choice for any Macintosh computer
with a ieee 1394 (firewire) port.

Like all Apple peripherals, the iSight comes with no software and
requires no more installation than simply connecting it via FireWire
(because, on the Mac, “plug and play” is actually plug and play). When
the iSight is plugged in, iChat AV automatically launches, and if you
don't already have an iChat account, a dialog box will launch to guide
you through the account setup. You can use iChat with existing AIM
and .Mac accounts, but not with Yahoo, Jabber, or Bonjour. In iChat, a
little green camera icon appears next to your screen name (the same
icon will also show up for any of your “buddies” who have video
capability), just click it to start a video chat. It is also simple to
use iSight with iMovie, just plug it in and select it as your camera.
As with most Apple products, the iSight's titanium case is attractive
and well-designed.

Most other webcams let you manually adjust focus, color saturation,
brightness, and contrast, but on the iSight all of these functions are
automatic. Though some of you may be unhappy with the lack of control,
the iSight takes only a second to adjust when moved, and the image
quality is consistently superior.

iSight and iChat work wonderfully together: sound quality is crisp and
clear, images on the transmitting and receiving ends are clear and
balanced and incredibly pure, especially for a webcam. With iMovie,
the iSight is just as flawless. It records clear, crisp images at 30
frames per second with excellent sound quality.
