[from Heikki Sipila] Iraq says 4 civilians injured in US-British raids =============================== Xinhuanet 2002-08-16 00:46:19
BAGHDAD, Aug. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Four Iraqi civilians were injured overnight in the bombings by US-British warplanes in southern Iraq,an Iraqi military spokesman said on Thursday. The spokesman was quoted by the official Iraqi News Agency (INA)as saying that on Wednesday at 22:35 local time (18:35 GMT), US-British planes bombed civilian facilities in the southern provincesof Wassit and Misan, wounding four Iraqis. Wassit and Misan are within the so-called southern no-fly zone, parallel to another one in northern Iraq. US-British planes have been patrolling the two no-fly zones since the 1991 Gulf War with the claimed aim of protecting the Kurds in the north and Shiite Muslims in the south from persecutionof the Iraqi government. Iraq does not recognize the air exclusion zones and has regularly opened fire at the Western planes enforcing the two no-fly zones. Iraq said more than 1,400 Iraqis have been killed by the bombings since the end of the Gulf War and more than 1,400 others have been injured.
