AFP. 1 October 2002. Two killed as Filipino communist rebels launch new attacks.

MANILA -- Two communist guerrillas were slain in two clashes with government
forces in the northern Philippines as part of a renewed offensive by the rebels,
officials said Tuesday.

The communist New People's Army (NPA) attacked a group of soldiers in Bulacan
province, just south of Manila, on Monday, leaving three troops wounded,
regional military chief Major General Alberto Braganza said.

Later the same day, an army patrol clashed with guerrillas in Cuyapo town in the
northern province of Nueva Ecija, leaving two rebels dead and five others
wounded, Braganza added.

The NPA has stepped up attacks recently, including raiding police stations
disguised as soldiers or lawmen.

National Security Adviser Roilo Golez said said there was "an internal debate,"
within government on whether the communists sincerely wanted to reopen peace
talks.

Peace talks with the rebels were suspended last year after the NPA assassinated
two legislators.

The military estimates there are 10,000 NPA guerrillas nationwide.
