16 West Hastings Street - Box 38; Vancouver, BC V6B 1G4 Tel: (604) 682-3269 Ext. 6197; [EMAIL PROTECTED] For Immediate Release Vancouver, Friday December 27, 2002 ISM-Vancouver Delegate Arrives in Palestine Drew Penland, a Vancouverite, takes on direct non-violent resistance to the Israeli Occupation Drew Penland, 28, a resident of Delta BC, arrived today in Palestine with a commitment to resist the Israeli Occupation via direct non-violent resistance actions. Pendland is an ISM-Vancouver Delegate, who was a UN Accredited Electoral Observer of UN Consultation on East Timor in 1999. Penland will be working with other Canadian and international ISM delegates to support the Palestinian creative and effective resistance to the occupation forces and settlers. The role of ISM delegates is to document and report humiliation and injustices Palestinians face daily on the hands of the Israeli Occupation. Delegates accompany Palestinians breaking 24 hour curfews to access food and water; escort children to schools and hospitals; assist Palestinian farmers work their lands safely; accompany Palestinians who face difficulties in getting through road blocks on foot or in Ambulances; deliver food, water and medical supplies to isolated areas and communities under siege; and protect Palestinian homes from demolition. "I hope to make a small but significant contribution to assisting the Palestinians overcome a horrible situation" Penland stated, "I think trying to defend the most basic of human rights is honorable and necessary." During the last 26 months Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation, Israel have killed over 2000, innocent men women and children, and injured over 40,000. Many human rights organizations, such as Amnesty, believe that Israel have illegally arrested thousands of Palestinians. The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) is a Palestinian-led initiative of Palestinian and International activists who support the Palestinian struggle for freedom and independence. "We utilize nonviolent direct-action methods of resistance to confront and challenge the illegal Israeli occupation forces and policies" George Rishmawi, ISM Co-founder said. ISM calls for Israel compliance with all UN resolutions pertaining to the End of Occupation, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees, as well as for an immediate international intervention to protect the Palestinian people and to ensure Israel's compliance with International Law.
