Note by Hunterbear:

The Winrod family and its three generations [Gerald, Gordon and David]
is a well known American racist clan -- which blends "church" and money with
Nazi-type hate doctrines. Their traditional regional base has been Kansas,
Missouri and Arkansas -- but they've gotten around broadly. Gordon Winrod
was a major leader in the National States Rights Party -- its national
"chaplain" -- a mostly Deep South-and-environs hate organization headed by
J.B. Stoner which, in contrast to the old "traditional" Southern Klans and
their perverted Jeffersonianism, took on and developed explicitly pervasive
Nazi characteristics. [NSRP had a major hand in blowing up the Black church
in Birmingham in September, '63 -- in which several small children died.] A
number of Winrods moved from their Missouri base up into LaMoure County, ND
some years ago. My youngest son, Peter [Mack], a '92 UND journalism grad,
and State Editor of the Bismarck Tribune, went into LaMoure County to do a
detailed series of stories on this nefarious outfit -- whose grandchildren
were in the middle of a violent custody battle. When I learned Mack was
going into that county, I gave him a belated graduation present: a .357
Ruger revolver which he still has, of course. He did a great series on the
Winrods and it played a helpful role in running them out of Dakota and back
to Missouri.
