AP. 20 March 2003. Thousands in Belgium protest start of war.

BRUSSELS -- Thousands of people took to the streets Thursday to protest
the start of the U.S.-led war against Iraq, with some protesters
scuffling with police and hurling rocks at the American embassy.

University students and youngsters skipped courses to demonstrate in
several cities.

The Belgian government, which has steadfastly opposed the war, said it
was disheartened Thursday that the United Nations had been sidestepped
by the war.

Some 1,600 people marched through Antwerp and some pelted police at the
end of the march.

In Brussels, four people were detained for throwing rocks at the U.S.
embassy.

About 2,000 students protested in the university town of Leuven close to
Brussels.
