Yes, in English it sounds ridiculous (civil behaviour, civility, and
so on), implying that there is a society that keeps good manners,
etc. So that belonging to "civil society" may imply that you
carefully erode your more poignant sides, let your weaponry fall at
the doorstep, and begin to friendly talk with your butcher.
But the original French "société civile" (same in Spanish at least)
is a battlecry. It was coined to give a name to the hitherto unknown
(basically non existent) mass of independent citizens who did not fit
in the frame of the Ancien Régime, that is the modern, bourgeois
society. "Société civile", in a country where the King explained that
"L'état c'est moi" (I am the State myself) was a battlecry, it meant
that there was an increasingly important fraction of the population
that was not the State, thus not the King.
"Political community" would probably be a better translation to
English, but am not sure. José, what you think?
