THE ULUCANLAR MASSACRE: EXACTLY ONE YEAR HAS GONE BY
THE MURDERERS HAVE NOT BEEN PUNISHED

WE WILL CONTINUE TO DEMAND A RECKONING

On September 26, 1999, in Ankara Ulucanlar Prison, TEN REVOLUTIONARY
PRISONERS WERE MURDERED. Dozens of prisoners were tortured to the point
where they could no longer be recognised. Special Teams, robocops,
gendarmes, Cevik Kuvvetleri (Rapid Reaction Forces) attacked them using gas
bombs and long-barrelled firearms. The only weapons our prisoners had to
resist with were their own bodies. The bodies of the revolutionary prisoners
were dismembered by torture. Even the members of parliament who viewed
footage of the effects of torture had to confirm that a massacre had taken
place. It was too much for their stomachs to endure. For days, for months,
the families of prisoners and democratic public opinion reacted by
expressing the demand that the murderers be judged. The authorities, instead
of putting the murderers on trial, have opened court proceedings against
those prisoners who survived the massacre, demanding that prison sentences
of hundreds of years be passed against them. The Susurluk state accepts the
murderers as its own. Nobody has gone to jail for killing ten revolutionary
prisoners.
THERE WAS NO JUSTICE IN THIS LAND. The murderers and torturers can massacre
and torture to their heart's content. For exactly a year, they have tried to
prevent millions of our people from seeing what really happened in the
massacre. They have tried to make people forget the massacre, citing
"reasons of state". All massacres in the country are committed "for reasons
of state". The prisoners' families, our people wanted justice; they wanted
the murderers judged and punished. Instead, for raising the demand, they
themselves were dragged along the ground, beaten with clubs and tortured. In
this land, there is only justice for the Sabancis, the Kocs, the Eczacibasis
(note: major monopolies in Turkey). There are no rights for those who even
want people's justice. Those who carry out massacres, those who protect the
murderers, those behind the massacres must also pay a price with their own
bodies. In the first year since the Ulucanlar massacre, we are continuing to
demand a reckoning. At seven in the morning on September 28, 2000, in
Esenler-Turgut Reis District (Istanbul), on a side street off the ring road
behind an overpass at the Yuzyil (Century) bridge near the Karabayir stop,
we carried out a bomb attack on a Cevik Kuvvetleri vehicle using a remote
control device, we destroyed a convoy belonging to the Cevik Kuvvetleri who
were among those responsible for Ulucanlar, wounding a large number of
police.
VIOLENCE IS LEGITIMATE IN A LAND WITHOUT JUSTICE
