Hi John,

One volunteer Junkyardsparkle did come back to me to say they didn't
know and generally be very helpful so I submitted some images to try
and help plug some gaps this gave me access to the github and I can
see that since the 6th November 2017 nobody other than junkyardsparkle
has picked up a calibration job - so this leads me to wondering is the
project dead?

The main development takes place at the Sourceforge repo:
https://sourceforge.net/p/lensfun/code/ci/master/tree/

There is still some activity, but calibrations may take some while until they are done. A new release of Lensfun is on its way but unfortunately quite a few changes in the library core were required and this still is really challenging to finish for only two developers with few spare time.

If it is it is a real shame and I hope someone picks it up, maybe one
of the commercial entities that use it could buy it and move it
forward in the longer term but for general users like myself it would
be really helpful to know;

        * Is the tarball being updated/maintained? (an alert to the mailing
list when it is would be very helpful)

It was never meant as an official source for updates and as it is the server from Torsten Bronger's calibration service only he can comment why updates of the files failed. This is also the reason why the files are not mentionened anywhere in the docs.

        * Is it worth continuing uploading calibration images? As if the
project is stalled they will never make it through to us at the user
end so perhaps we would be better off lokking for alternative
software.

Please be patient, AFAIk nothing will be lost, but it may take several months from upload until the profile appears in the database. If anyone is willing to help in the calibration process, feel free to contact junkyardsparkle or Torsten. That's what the github repo is intended for. It will regularly be merged into the Sourceforge master.

Furthermore, if anyone is interested to help us with the development of Lensfun in all areas, this support will be more than welcome! The database update infrastructure and profiling process already improved a lot over the last years and there are some really good starting points to automatize it. Still, nothing is perfect and there's a lot of work left for volunteers.

Sebastian
