Actually, I had another go starting from scratch and it went smoothly!. A version refactored as you requested is in the mod_rclick feature branch. I have also altered the api for menu and generator callbacks, but as no one is using it, there should be no problem. I have started a feature branch because there are problems that will IMO be better solved in the core, especially if its use is to be extended to the tree canvas etc.(Hijacking bodyrclick for other widgets is plain wrong.) The current version has fixes for some old bugs and some workarounds for some focus and selection problems. I won't push anything else to this branch until you decide if you want to use this version for 4.4.8 or leave things as they are.
