Done at the trunk at rev 1784.  A script in test.leo now works as expected.

WARNING: All unit tests pass, as do some hand tests.  Furthermore, I have
made absolutely the minimal changes necessary to the code. Still, this must
be considered a major change.  There is the risk of serious damage to files
if I have missed something.  Use caution and please report anything that
seems at all strange immediately.

I committed this to the trunk because creating a separate branch would, imo,
merely postpone the testing that must be done.
