I mean that you must use either:
@string initial_split_orientation = vertical
or
@string initial_split_orientation = horizontal
Iirc, anything that starts with v will do, ditto for h.
Anyway, you can see what settings are in effect by doing
print-settings. You will see something like:
initialsplitorientation = vertical
