One consideration is that with linux you won't need to pay for an OS license, and finding ready-to-run vm appliances is easy. However as Terry said you should go with the one you are most comfortable with. I've used vmware and virtualbox, with linux and windows hosting. I like them both, with perhaps the performance edge going to vmware. However you may not need either.
