In the past I have been cool to the idea, if not dismissive. But it does seem that basing the idea on a DB promises the solution to the real (or imagined) problems. In particular, gnx's are supposed are unique, so references are well defined. Presumably the DB would be the platform that solves the multiple-update problem.
