Both the logging and the present idea of the dot are shown in the vim status area, the same area as the minibuffer. Visual mode doesn't show the logged strokes because a) they could be inferred from the expanding selections range and b) they might not matter anyway: the commands that end visual mode use the selection range, whatever it happens to be. But as I write this, it seems that the logged strokes do matter, so maybe I'll show stokes in visual mode also.
