Figured it out (maybe, i think, not sure...)

I was missing the @bool scripting-abbreviations = True

Had to dig in leoSettinge.leo to find that this was needed.

 I could finally make the date;; abbreviation work, but still no luck for 
the def;; abbreviation ... am I missing something?
