No, that is not right. I reported the bug initially but upstream was apparently on leave at the time: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2007-07/msg00032.html He did respond to me a few weeks later but I'd lost interest by then: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2007-08/msg00009.html So I dropped the ball on this one, sorry. Someone with sufficient motivation should definitely pick this up and run with it. ie: work with upstream to get it fixed. Intermittent failures are nasty!
