Well, I got it fixed, but I don't know exactly how.  I reinstalled
fontconfig and freetype and most of the libraries in Chapter 26 that
might have anything at all to do with fonts like gtk+, pango, cairo,
etc.  I did update some of the library versions to the latest in the book.

I also remaed my ~/.fonts directory.  Don't know for sore where I went
wrong, but the fonts work now.

And gimp 2-4 works fine.  I did not have to recompile it, so it is now a
CMMI application.
