I'm not doing _any_ book development at the moment (hope to get away next week, but not yet certain), but as I've said before: gcc-4.3 is something I'd rather not touch. From the lwn report at http://lwn.net/Articles/281089/ (subscribers only for the next two weeks) there are 3 bugs holding up 4.3.1: 36013 (pointers - looks as if it was fixed on Tuesday) 36079 (x86 direction flag issue - no consensus on this, some people say gcc needs to fix this, some people say it's a kernel problem - and technically it's an information leakage, although exploiting it is not obvious [ famous last words... ] ). ISTR the gcc release manager decided not to announce 4.3 because of this (the tarball had already been uploaded before the issue was found). 36090 (ppc64, but it still matters to me :) - looks like this is on the way to being fixed, but I got lost in bugzilla!
