I wish your solution worked too. I think Nathan's comment about "Load
the partition set within the kernel image (Set w/ rdev)" holds here.
I'll bet the following works for you too:
menuentry "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.33 (label)" {
linux /boot/vmlinux-2.6.33
}
