I run mdadm, lvm, and dm-crypt with an initramfs. mdev works fine for all of 
those; I haven't tried devtmpfs yet to comment on that.

And I'm pretty sure vgchange/vgscan will (or can be commanded to) create its 
own nodes, even without a device manager of any kind.

But in any case you don't need a persistent or custom-configured device manager 
to use those features.
