From memory, the issue wasn't standard Slackware installation, but some trimmed-down version (I have no idea how) that somehow managed to get libmpfr.la installed but not libgmp.la, and that caused an issue when building gcc pass1. As for the .la files, there should either be all of them or none of them. libtool will by default fall back to using standard -llibrary instead of full path to the .la file. -- Note: My last name is not Krejzi.
