Oftentimes, describing the problem helps me to think of things to
google for.  There are a lot of posts about high CPU usage in xfce
over the years, for all sorts of reasons (e.g. binary display
drivers), but I found

and indeed the xfce calculator plugin WAS the problem.  With that
removed, Xorg is back to around 2% CPU usage.
