Oftentimes, describing the problem helps me to think of things to google for. There are a lot of posts about high CPU usage in xfce over the years, for all sorts of reasons (e.g. binary display drivers), but I found https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,980.0.html and indeed the xfce calculator plugin WAS the problem.
